A Review of the 4MATIC AWD/4WD System Found in a Used Merc
In today's marketplace, there is a heavy demand for four-wheel drive systems that enable motorists to conquer off-road or tricky conditions. This is made possible through the drivetrain providing torque to each wheel end of a two-axled car at the same time. Unsurprisingly, one of the leader's in this field is Mercedes with their 4MATIC AWD four-wheel drive system
The 4MATIC System
What is so impressive about the 4MATIC system and what makes it stand out from the rest is the fact that it uses an automatic system - if one of the four wheels begins to slip, it will automatically send power to the opposite wheel to adjust. Even if three of the wheels slip, the fourth will adjust to conquer the terrain.
It is powered by a seven-speed automatic transmission which works together with a range of other impressive modern features - this means that the demands of each individual wheel are carefully managed. As an example, the system will constantly monitor the rotational speed of each wheel to see if it is rotating at the right speed when cornering, and make an adjustment if required. The vehicle is also capable of remaining stable no matter how the power is spread across the wheels, ensuring that you have complete control and maximum traction even on the toughest of terrain.
In terms of competition, the 4MATIC is going up against the very highly rated Audi Quattro and the BMW xDrive. All system are excellent and perform very well in tough conditions, but each have their own characteristics that make them intriguing to compare and there is a lot of debate over which is best.
The main differences are that Quattro utilises a more mechanical system than the other two which can be problematic in certain situations, whilst the electrical system in the 4MATIC and x-Drive is safer in the eyes of some. All systems are more than capable, however, and it will come down to your personal preference/bias.
The 4Matic Range
The good news for Mercedes fans is that the 4MATIC system is available on practically all of Mercedes' classes. You simply need to find a Used Merc for a reasonable price from a reputable dealership and take it out for a spin to see how the 4MATIC performs.
Four-wheel-drive systems are very popular and particularly in areas with hazardous conditions such as snow or heavy rain. Fortunately, there is some healthy competition in this sector which means that there are some fantastic systems available, including Mercedes' very impressive and innovative 4MATIC system.
