About Us
wetroads was set-up in 2000, initially as a millenium project to document the nations remaining fords at the turn of the century. In those days, I thought that there would probably be about 150-200 out there. How wrong could I be?
Since those early days, the website has grown and become much loved by many diverse communities ranging from classic car owners, to off-road enthusiasts and even to environmental scientists interested in point sources of river pollution.
wetroads has given the opportunity for these communities to enjoy our fording heritage. In doing so, wetroads has encouraged 'ford tourism', bringing people into remote parts of our countryside, bolstering the local economies by increasing the use of rural pubs, farm shops, garages and our increasingly threatened sub post offices. This is a deliverable of wetroads that I never could have imagined.
wetroads is compiled by Prof. Lee Chapman, a Northerner exiled in my adopted home county of Worcestershire. However, without the support of the hundreds of regional correspondants across the country, the project would still be in the starting blocks. I thank you all.
