Chillerton
SZ491844 (1*) Suitable for All
Sent in by David Hall (24/07/2009)

'This is accessible by all throughout the year however Brook Lane is quite tight and it is hard to turn around without using private drives. You can continue on from Brook Lane down a byway that exits on the main road opposite Highwood Lane, however it is extremely bumpy and good clearance is advised.'

'All of these are on the same watercourse:

Spring Lane (SZ488882). This has a 'ford closed' sign on it. It is too deep for normal cars anyway, with a silty bed. I have even seen fish in it!'

'Castle Street (SZ486881). This has a 6'6" width restriction. Due to flooding a few years ago, it has recently been improved. It now has a smooth gravel bed. Note that you travel along rather than across the river. Suitable for 2wd cars. Partly dry in Summer and only a few inches deep this Winter. Only hazard is the ducks!'

'Clatterford Shute (SZ482876). Only a few inches deep with concrete base.'

'Froglands Lane (SZ483875). The best one. Sand and gravel bed which is 4" lower than the concrete ramps, feels worrying as rear wheels drop off. About a foot deep in Summer, probably best left to 4x4s in Winter.'

'The council have done some work on the approaches to Froglands Lane ford in the last three months. The drop into the ford has been angled with tarmac now so is it much smoother. I reckon that it is passable all year round by any vehicle now.' David Hall

Shanklin
SZ583811 (1*) Restricted Access
Sent in by David Wilson (07/09/2003)

'A small ford on the old road which runs past the upper end of Shanklin Chine, just below Old Shanklin village. The stream disappears down the chine to the sea about half a mile away. The road is bollarded at each end which prevents the entrance of cars, but there is no sign prohibiting the use of motor cycles. There is also a small footbridge.'

Wellow
SZ388880 (1*) Off-Roaders Only!
(27/05/2002)

'The Ford itself is unsurfaced and only about 6" wide and 1" deep at present (although the weather is somewhat dry). It has an unsurfaced base and has a small pedestrian footbridge alongside it. It is only passable for cars with either or both lots of ground clearance or very short overhangs as the entry/exit ramps are about 12" deep at a 45 degree angle.

The house by the Ford ("Tiggywicks Cottage") is a holiday let and the people using seem to feel that they have the right to park their vehicle blocking the road. However, the local Parish Council are onto the issue so hopefully it'll be easier to pass in the future.'
